This bird originates from the Dutch town of Welsum. Originally bred from various partridge coloured hens, they were later crossed with the Barnevelder and the Rhode Island Red. Hens will lay about 160 dark brown eggs a year similar in colour to that of a Maran except they are matt rather than shiny. They are an attractive bird to look at and will adapt to most management systems. The image of the cockerel is used on well known cornflake packets.
